After nearly 50 years in business, Mundelein's beloved Royal Cantonese restaurant has permanently closed following the sudden death of co-owner John Lew.
Royal Cantonese, the longtime Chinese restaurant at 799 E. Route 45 in Mundelein, has permanently closed after co-owner John Lew passed away unexpectedly. The restaurant had been a staple of the community for nearly five decades.
A Family Legacy Since 1975
John and his wife Doreen Lew opened Royal Cantonese together in 1975 and ran it side by side ever since. Over the years, the restaurant became known for its authentic Cantonese dishes — including its award-winning egg rolls — and built a loyal following across Lake County.
The couple poured their lives into the business for close to 50 years, making it one of the longest-running family restaurants in the Mundelein area.

What Happened
John Lew's death was sudden and unexpected. His family has described the loss as "deeply devastating."
With John gone, Doreen is now left grieving while also facing difficult financial realities. She has been forced to close the restaurant and begin the process of selling the business — bringing decades of work to an abrupt end far sooner than the family had planned.
A Community Favorite
Royal Cantonese earned strong reviews over the years, with regulars praising the consistent quality and welcoming atmosphere. For many Mundelein residents, the restaurant was a go-to spot for family dinners, takeout nights, and celebrations spanning generations.
The closure marks the end of an era for the local dining scene and leaves a significant gap on Route 45.
Looking Ahead
It remains to be seen what will happen with the property at 799 E. Route 45. For now, the Lew family is focused on navigating this difficult transition.
The Downtown Mundelein community extends its condolences to Doreen and the entire Lew family.
