About Santa's Cottage

Santa's Cottage is perhaps the most iconic event in the Mundelein Community Connection calendar. For over 30 years, this beloved downtown tradition has provided children with a magical, one-on-one experience with Santa in a unique, cozy house that feels far removed from the commercialized atmosphere of a department store or mall.

2026 Schedule

Santa's Cottage will be open on three Saturdays in December:

December 5, 2026: 2:00pm-4:00pm & 6:30pm-8:00pm
December 12, 2026: 12:00pm-3:00pm
December 19, 2026: 12:00pm-3:00pm

The Santa's Cottage Experience

The inspiration for Santa's Cottage began with Oscar Demski, a long-time resident of Mundelein and the recipient of MCC's first "Volunteer of the Year" Award in 1993. In 1992, Oscar created the plans, solicited donations, and enlisted volunteer carpenters, electricians, and other tradesmen to build the first Cottage.

Oscar's vision was simple but special: he wanted kids to be able to visit Santa one-on-one in a unique, cozy house. He believed that waiting outside in winter for the visit made the experience of seeing a big, jolly Santa in a small space much more memorable. Oscar passed away in 2023, but his memory lives on through this cherished tradition.

History

1992: The first Santa's Cottage was built by Oscar Demski and volunteers
1993-2015: Located at the NE corner of Seymour and Park Streets
2015-Present: Moved to Plaza Circle next to the new Village Hall

The Cottage has been remodeled a couple of times over the years but remains true to Oscar's initial design.

How It Works

The Cottage is maintained and operated largely by volunteers. It is set up, decorated, and stored in the off-season by the Mundelein Public Works Department. Each year, it is staffed by Santa and Mrs. Claus and a team of dedicated elves. Dozens of local businesses provide refreshments, gift bags, and financial support to keep the Cottage going.
